American Federation of Government Employees (AFGE) & The International Union of Bricklayers and Allied Craftworkers Local 1 MD, VA & DC Endorse Ben Jealous For Governor
Former National President & CEO of the NAACP Has Received All Major Union Endorsements Supplementing An Impressive Field Program With Union Organizers
Silver Spring -- TODAY, Tuesday, October 23, 2018, Ben Jealous, former National President & CEO of the NAACP received the endorsements of the American Federation of Government Employees (AFGE) and the International Union of Bricklayers and Allied Craftworkers Local 1 MD, VA & DC. More than 147,500 federal employees live in Maryland – caring for veterans, supporting our military, ensuring Medicaid and Medicare recipients get their health care benefits, and protecting our natural resources. There are nearly 305,000 current and retired federal workers in Maryland. Both of these organizations will join the Jealous campaign's extensive union organizing effort to increase Democratic turnout in November.
"I'm proud to have the endorsement of the American Federation of Government Employees and the International Union of Bricklayers and Allied Craftworkers Local 1," said Jealous. "As someone whose success comes from the fruits of the good union jobs held by my grandparents and parents, I know that we need to stand up to the Trump Administration when they attempt to undermine the rights of workers."
“Ben Jealous is a staunch advocate for the rights of federal employees and all public-sector workers, and he wants to make it easier for all workers in Maryland to organize and fight for fair wages and benefits,” AFGE District 4 National Vice President Dan Doyle said. “With public-sector employees across this country facing unprecedented attacks on their workplace rights, it’s more important than ever that we support candidates like Ben who will always have our backs.”
“Ben Jealous breathed new life into the NAACP when he was elected as the organization’s youngest ever president – building coalitions with labor unions and other progressive organizations to fight for voting rights, criminal justice reform, environmental justice, and so much more,” AFGE District 14 National Vice President Eric Bunn Sr. said. “Ben will bring that same passion and energy to the statehouse as Maryland’s next governor.”
“Ben recently visited our training facility and witnessed firsthand what a union apprenticeship program is designed to do – create a skilled workforce while providing a respectable career in the trades," said Scott Garvin, President at Bricklayers & Allied Craftworkers 1 MD, VA, DC. "Ben knows very well that unions provide a pathway to the middle class, because he’s lived it. His commitment to Project Labor Agreements, prevailing wage and working families is why I support Ben Jealous for governor.”
Jealous has now been endorsed by organizations representing hundreds of thousands of Marylanders actively engaged in turning out over a million voters this November. Democratic unions and new progressive organizations are seeing a surge in enthusiasm for bold ideas and wholesale solutions that Jealous has put forward like Medicare-for-All, a $15 minimum wage, and fully funding public education.
