Apprenticeship
The Journeyperson of Bricklayers and Allied
Craftworkers Local 1 lay and bind building materials, such
as brick, structural tile, concrete block, cinder block,
glass block, and terra-cotta block, with mortar and other
substances to construct or repair walls, partitions, arches,
sewers, and other structures.
The following is information on what is required of our
apprentices per the rules and restrictions formulated by the
Joint Apprenticeship Training Committee.
Qualifications
- Age - Minimum age 17.
- Education - Preferably a high school graduate or G.E.D.
- Physical Condition - Must be physically able to perform
the work of the trade and be able to work a normal workweek
on a regular basis.
- Must have a driver's license and reliable
transportation.
- Must have a Social Security card.
- Pre-job drug screening test.
Terms of Apprenticeship
- Length of Training - Three (3) or Four (4) years of
on-the-job training.
- Related Instruction - Successful completion of a minimum
of one hundred forty-four (144) to one hundred sixty (160)
hours each year of related instruction (evening school (3)
three hours or Saturdays (8) eight hours). September through
June.

Obligation of Apprentices
The Apprentice, having read the standards formulated by the
Joint Apprenticeship and Training Committee and signed an
agreement with said Committee, agrees to all terms and
conditions contained therein and to serve such time, perform
such manual training, and study such subjects as the Committee
may deem necessary to become a skilled journeyman of the trade.
In signing the apprenticeship agreement, the apprentice agrees
to the following responsibilities and obligations under the
apprenticeship program:
- To perform diligently and faithfully the work of the
trade and other pertinent duties assigned by the Joint
Apprenticeship and Training Committee and the employer in
accordance with the provisions of the standards.
- To protect the property of the employer and abide by the
working rules and regulations of the employer, the Union,
and the Joint Apprenticeship and Training Committee.
- To attend regularly and complete satisfactorily the
required hours of instruction in subjects related to the
trade as provided under the local standards.
- To maintain such records of work experience and training
received on the job and in related instruction as may be
required by the Joint Apprenticeship and Training Committee.
- To develop safe working habits and to conduct
himself/herself at work in such a manner 'as to assure
his/her own safety and that of his/her fellow workers.
- To work for the employer to whom assigned until the
completion of his/her apprenticeship, unless he/she is
reassigned to another employer or his/her agreement is
terminated by the Joint Apprenticeship and Training
Committee.
- To conduct himself/herself at all times in a creditable,
ethical, and moral manner, realizing that much time, money,
and effort will be spent in affording him/her an opportunity
to become a skilled craftsman.
- To be responsible for his/her own transportation to work
sites and related classroom instruction.
- To be involved in the local unions Organizing and
Political Action Committees under the direction of the
Apprentice Director.
